Using a subnet with virtual machines
[gb] Shadow Hawkins on Thursday, 22 April 2010 00:44:51
Hello, I am currently writing a thesis about IPv6 on decentralized networks, which requires a bit of experimentation. Since I don't have the required hardware for this at the moment, I'm trying to setup a small network of virtual machines using IPv6. My computer is running Ubuntu 9.10. It's connected to the SixXS tunnel with AYIYA. Things are working fine. I'm using VirtualBox 3.0.8_OSE r53138, which is supposed to support IPv6. The virtual machines are running Ubuntu 9.10 and Debian 5. I would like them to use addresses within the subnet I got from SixXS. When I configure one of the VMs to use an address from the subnet, IPv6 does not work. Pinging an IPv6 address gives me a "network unreachable error", and I can't even reach the endpoint of the tunnel from any of the VMs. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks !

Not providing a single detail at all about the configurations (and live outputs) of any of the hosts in involved. As in general, see the reporting problems list for a list of things to provide, without that nobody is able to help you out.

I run a few Xen VMs, and I have this routing information in radvd.conf, running on my router VM that runs AICCU too: interface eth3 { AdvSendAdvert on; prefix 2001:41e0:xxxx:xxxx::/64 route 2001:41e0:xxxx::/48 }; I can't currently do further tests because there is no IPv4 route to my PoP and therefore no IPv6 connection.

See the FAQ, you only need the 'prefix' line, the route line is nonsense. Do watch out for multicast issues, some VM's don't handle it correctly and thus IPv6 Neighbor Discovery etc will then fail.
