aiccue autotest shows no output, traceroute6 seems to work ubuntu 9.04

People, I think I have successfully installed aiccu and setup IPv6 on my desktop ubuntu 9.04 machine. However aiccue autotest reports nothing. But traceroute6 says that I can get the www.kame.net. I don't see the dancing turtle.

When I point my browser to www.kame.net, I think I am connecting using ipv4. Two questions: 1) Why is aiccu autotest not reporting anything, and 2) Why am I not connecting to IPv6 servers using IPv6? Thank you Jeff Silverman jeffsilverm at gmail dot com

Curiously, when I go to http://whatismyv6.com/, I get my correct IP address 2001:1938:81:126::2. SO why does aiccu autotest yield no output?

1) Why is aiccu autotest not reporting anything
Most likely as you are already running one in the background.
jeffs@heavy:~$ traceroute6 www.kame.net
traceroute to www.kame.net (2001:200:0:8002:203:47ff:fea5:3085) from
2001:1938:81:126::2, 30 hops max, 16 byte packets
1 gw (2001:1938:81:126::1) 79.209 ms 79.097 ms 78.767 ms
[..] Every single host is reversed to 'gw', that is rather odd... any special DNS settings you made?
2) Why am I not connecting to IPv6 servers using IPv6?
Application does not support IPv6? or your configuration prefers IPv4 over IPv6, can be a lot of things. Try using www.ipv6.sixxs.net that should force IPv6.

I can get to www.ipv6.sixxs.net and it says I am using IPv6. It gives me my correct IPv6 address. So my IPv6 installation is working. aiccu is running in the background. I wish that if you tried running aiccu in the foreground while aiccu is running in the background, that it would generate an error message instead of failing silently, but now that I know what to look for, I guess that's okay. Now for my next question. I have two machines, a desktop and a server. I would like both of them to be IPv6 capable. However, I have 1 routable IP address. Is it sufficient for me to put a link local IP address on both the server and the desktop and then run radv on the server or do I have to get a second routable IP address? I know that sixXS can give me a block of IP addresses, but that costs IKS points and I don't think I have enough points to get a block yet. Thank you for your kind assistance.

Hi Jeff, you can't use link-local addresses for this issue. Link.local adresses can only be used to communicate inside a local network as the name mentions. If you want to connect more than one computer to the IPv6 - internet, you need to request an IPv6 subnet. Then you cant use this subnet with radvd to spread the global IPv6 addresses along your network.

Sorry, i wanted to say: Then you CAN use this subnet with radvd to spread the global IPv6 addresses along your network.

If you are using Firefox enter about:config as URL and filter for ipv6. network.dns.disableIPv6 is false by default but maybe it got set to true. That would keep it from preferring ip6 AAAA records over ip4 lookups. Conversely, turn it off if the AAAA fetches seem to slow you down.

I am making progress. I can do a traceroute6 from my webserver (Ubuntu 8.04 tunnel type Dynamic (ayiya)) with to www.ipv6.sixxs.com and I can do a curl to http://www.ipv6.sixxs.com (I get a 301 redirect, but that's okay - IPv6 is working). My sixxs IPv6 address is inet6 addr: 2001:1938:81:126::2/64 Scope:Global I have radvd setup on my webserver and I think it is working because my desktop (Ubuntu 10.4) has a global IPv6 address, inet6 addr: 2001:1938:81:126:204:4bff:fe06:d0b9/64 Scope:Global which it didn't have until I got radvd working. However, I do not have IPv6 connectivity from the desktop to www.ipv6.sixxs.com, as tested by traceroute6 and ping6. Using wireshark, I can see IPv6 packets going from 2001:1938:81:126:204:4bff:fe06:d0b9 to 2001:1af8:1:f006::6 which is ipv6.nginx.sixxs.net. The packets have MAC destination 00:20:ed:67:4c:eb, which is the MAC address of the webserver. But nothing is coming back. Using wireshark, I can see neighbor solicitation and neighbor advertisements. I was expecting that if the desktop got its configuration from the webserver, then it would route through the webserver which would then tunnel the packets to www.ipv6.sixxs.com. I think my expectation is wrong. I think I need another subnet for IPv6 communications within my house. Am I correct? Thank you in advance Jeff Silverman

[..] 2001:1938:81:126:204:4bff:fe06:d0b9/64 [..]
That is tunnel address space. To be more exact, that is the prefix that lives on the tunnel between your host (<pfx>::2) and the PoP (<pfx>::1). No other addresses can be used. If you want to connect other hosts, you need to request a subnet. Check your routing tables (ip -6 ro sho) and you see that it can't work. A /64 can only live on one interface...
