OpenSuse outgoing IPv6 address
[de] Shadow Hawkins on Sunday, 05 December 2010 11:08:03
Hi, I'm trying to setup my OpenSuse 11.3 server with multiple ipv6 addresses. The server should act as an IPv6-only WWW-Server but I'll also want to use it for example as SOCKS proxy. On eth0 I have the following IPs active:
2001:4dd0:feeb::224:8cff:fed2:bdf2 2001:4dd0:feeb::8
The first IPv6 is generated by the operating system. The second IPv6 was added by myself with command:
ip -6 addr add 2001:4dd0:feeb::8/64 dev eth0
Outgoing request should only use the first IP, the second IP should only be used by incomming requests to the apache. But in fact also most outgoing traffic now uses the second IP. Because I'm not that linux expert myself I could use some hints. How can I get my host to use the generated IP for all outgoing traffic? Thanks, Lars

Hi there, I've reached a milestone in solving my problem. After some research I found an option which seems to serve my requirements. I've modified the command which adds the second IPv6 address slightly. Resulting in this new command line:
ip -6 addr add 2001:4dd0:feeb::8/64 dev eth0 preferred_lft 0
As far as I've traced the traffic leaving my server no paket was labled with IP 2001:4dd0:feeb::8. Only those pakets resulting in an answer from the WWW server listing at that IP where labled with the particular address. May be someone has a better suggestion for solving my problem then reducing the preferred_lft. Lars
