Tunnel through Cisco Soho 97
[be] Shadow Hawkins on Tuesday, 20 December 2005 10:57:48
Hi everybody! Is there any possibility to let the tunnel passing the Cisco Soho 97 router? (from the Internet to the Lan) You can only configure PAT for TCP and UDP (and GRE), but not protocol 41. I have set my server (tunnel endpoint) as default for 'PAT', with no result (only TCP/UDP get routed). On all the Cisco related posts I have found, the solution seems to be to use the router as tunnel endpoint, but my IOS 12.2 doesn't know anything about IPV6, and upgrading IOS doesn't look to be a solution, IPV6 does not come on the Soho97 (from what I understand from the CISCO release notes) Apart from getting another modem, any other possibility? Tnx Philippe

Hi Filippe, You're right. You need a IP PLUS 12.2T or higher image. There is no IP plus image for the soho 97. You might consider using a 837 image, as the soho 97 is almost the same. No guaranties however! For the NAT thing. I've tried it all, even all kinds of route-map stuff, but there is no way you can get protocol 41 through a dynamic NAT. You can use static, but it will cost you a (only?) IPv4 address. Maybe it's an option to run a static nat on your IPv4 and send it all to the machine where you run your tunnel client (maybe some linux box?) You can run PAT on that machine to facilitate your IPv4 internet traffic. The advantage of this construction is that you can still use your firewalling and access-lists on the cisco for protection. Good luck with the setup! - Martijn

You can get it working, but it will break many other things (icmp not working, problems with VPN tunnels). I've been using this method on a C836 for a while, and using a 26xx as ipv6 router. Unfortunately i haven't saved the configuration.

Tnx for the help guys! I eventually gave up, and moved my tunnel where I have direct internet access 8-)

It is impossible to use any image for Cisco 837 on a Cisco soho97, the router will refuse to boot such an image (and IIRC, i wasn't even successful in trying to install that image into flash ...).
