noobish question, handling multiple sites out of a /48
[us] Shadow Hawkins on Saturday, 09 December 2006 18:04:04
Good day all.. I've got a /48 delegated to me already (2001:4830:1224::/48). I'm using a Linksys WRT54GS with OpenWRT on my home net. Everything's working just beautifully with 2001:4830:1224::/64 on my home net. I've also got a machine in a colo at a site that does NOT support ipv6, yet at least. I'd like to carve out another /64 and route it to the system at the colo (say, 2001:4830:1224:1::/64). Obviously, the machine in the colo has a static IP, and is only on a single interface. Would I be better off moving my tunnel to that point, and then establishing a new tunnel between my home net and my server at the colo and routing like that, or could I setup a tunnel between here and the server in the colo and route through here? Am I being clear enough about what I'd like to do? Thanks in advance for the wisdom... --jason

I have the same situation as you, so can you tell me what you ended up doing? Thanks. Nick

You request a tunnel per location and at the places where you need it you request a subnet. This way you are not adding more latency and redirection of packets over the internet. You can of course always make a tunnel between two places yourself and fix up that routing this way. Do note, you should never ever announce the prefix you get into global BGP.

So at one of my sites, I don't need a lan. I really only need one address with reverse dns delegated to me so I can have forward and reverse dns match each other because it is my mail server. Should I just ask for a /64 for this or what else can I do? Will sixxs ever allow splitting a /48 between tunnels? I realize this would make routing more complicated so I understand if you won't.
