traceroute6 yields weird results
[de] Shadow Hawkins on Wednesday, 02 May 2007 18:39:04
Hi! I noticed a strange problem with traceroute6 from my v6 subnet. I know that the sixxs-gw does not answer pings due to rate limiting, which is okay. But it seems that the first few hops are not answering. For example if I traceroute6 orange.kame.net:
traceroute6 to orange.kame.net (2001:200:0:8000::42) from 2001:6f8:12e9:2001:20e:a6ff:fee1:591d, 64 hops max, 12 byte packets 1 2001:6f8:12e9:2001::1 0.713 ms 0.333 ms 0.249 ms 2 2001:6f8:12e9::f002:1 19.082 ms 18.155 ms 18.246 ms 3 * * * (...) 12 * * * 13 p64-1-0-0.r20.nycmny01.us.bb.gin.ntt.net 142.893 ms p64-0-3-0.r21.chcgil09.us.bb.gin.ntt.net 163.691 ms as-2.r20.tokyjp01.jp.bb.gin.ntt.net 311.068 ms 14 as-2.r21.sttlwa01.us.bb.gin.ntt.net 223.235 ms xe-0-0-0.a20.tokyjp01.jp.ra.gin.ntt.net 326.653 ms 316.248 ms 15 p64-2-1-0.r20.sttlwa01.us.bb.gin.ntt.net 207.141 ms ge-2-0-0-3.a13.tokyjp01.jp.ra.gin.ntt.net 305.137 ms ae-0.r20.sttlwa01.us.bb.gin.ntt.net 227.321 ms 16 as-3.r20.tokyjp01.jp.bb.gin.ntt.net 319.787 ms 2001:218:2000:5000::92 319.169 ms as-3.r20.tokyjp01.jp.bb.gin.ntt.net 302.888 ms 17 ve-4.nec2.yagami.wide.ad.jp 322.548 ms 321.922 ms xe-0-0-0.a20.tokyjp01.jp.ra.gin.ntt.net 321.318 ms 18 lo0.alaxala1.k2.wide.ad.jp 309.628 ms ge-3-0-0-9.a13.tokyjp01.jp.ra.gin.ntt.net 300.578 ms ge-3-0-0-5.a13.tokyjp01.jp.ra.gin.ntt.net 418.000 ms 19 orange.kame.net 325.413 ms 2001:218:2000:5000::92 310.100 ms orange.kame.net 320.151 ms
all tracepath6s yield similar results. traces from the sixxs website (and other sites) into my network show normal behavior. I tried to find out what the cause of this problem is but I`m stuck at the moment. Anyone got an idea what I could try or if the problem isn`t even on my side? Thanks in advance Markus

gna. I should have noted that i can ping each and every hop from here to the destination as far as i could get hold of a DNS name or IP6 address. Also, this might not be the right forum, as this might not be a setup problem. If so I kindly apologize for posting in the wrong forum. Markus

What kind of traceroute are you using, ICMP, TCP or UDP based? Also check your TTL on the tunnel, it has to be 64, not inherit.

Hello! Thank you. A short ip tunnel change sixxs ttl 64 fixed the problem. Although i suspeceted the problem being a ttl problem, it probably would have taken me ages to find out about the tunnel ttl setting. Thank you very much! Markus
