MTU for Heartbeat tunnel
[nl] Shadow Hawkins on Sunday, 24 July 2011 19:17:33
Is it better to set the MTU from 1280 to 1480 with this type of tunnel (on SiXXS site and with netsh interface set subinterface aiccu mtu=1480)? Since it's a Proto-41 tunnel: http://www.sixxs.net/faq/connectivity/?faq=mtu Can someone confirm this? Thanks.

As that FAQ states, that depends completely on the MTU that you have on the IPv4 path between your endpoint and the PoP.

How can I check this? The MTU of my own network is 1500. The PoP I use is nlams05 (Surfnet). How can I check the MTU of this PoP on my Windows box (since tracepath is not for Windows)?

Oh well, this tool does the same http://www.elifulkerson.com/projects/mturoute.php :)

C:\Users\Administrator\Downloads>mturoute nlams05.sixxs.net * ICMP Fragmentation is not permitted. * * Speed optimization is enabled. * * Maximum payload is 10000 bytes. * + ICMP payload of 1472 bytes succeeded. - ICMP payload of 1473 bytes is too big. Path MTU: 1500 bytes. So 1480 should be the ideal MTU to use for the tunnel (Path MTU = 1500 - 20 for IPv4 overhead).
