Setup Debian on Time Capsule network
[dk] Shadow Hawkins on Monday, 02 April 2012 21:49:41
Hello, First of all, I'm no network-guru. So please, be nice :-) What I want: At first I just want to be able to SSH my little Debian machine, that I finally got setup here at home, outside of my router. As static IPv4s isn't available from my ISP, I was suggested SixXS. What I have: - A Tunnel from SixXS - A Time Capsule - EEE PC900 running Debian - MacBook Pro (2009) What I've tried: I've tried to setup my Time Capsule (firmware 7.6.1) through these instructions on the wiki (http://www.sixxs.net/wiki/Apple_Airport). Both automatic and manually (using the settings at the bottom). My Time Capsule keeps complaining about a tunneling error, when doing it manually. I'm able to ping google (ping6 ipv6.google.com) from my Debian setup connected through ethernet, and getting responses. On my MacBook (on WiFi) however, I can't. I tried forcing every single interface (using ping6 ipv6.google.com -I <interface>) but it simply won't ping google. I'm either getting a "ping6: UDP connect: No route to host"-error, which is caused by my router setup (atleast that's what google told me) or "ping6: getaddrinfo -- nodename nor servname provided, or not known"-error. 'ping6 ::1' works fine on the MacBook. When I run the aiccu-tool on my Debian machine, I get no response from the terminal when running 'aiccu start', 'aiccu test'. However, I can see the version and the tunnels available. 'ping6 tunnel::1' or 'ping6::tunnel2' doesn't work either, on the debian machine. What concerns me: Is my debian server setup correctly? It seems to be have ipv6 connectivity. Why can't I ping google on my Mac? As if I can't do that, I surely can't find my server. Thanks a lot for your time.

My Time Capsule keeps complaining about a tunneling error
As you currently have an AYIYA tunnel and Apple does not support that protocol, that is not that odd. Only static tunnels are supported by their hardware. (On MacOSX one can run AICCU though and also thus AYIYA tunnels)
I'm able to ping google (ping6 ipv6.google.com) from my Debian setup connected through ethernet, and getting responses.
If you do a
traceroute6 www.sixxs.net
what is the output? Likely you are using 6to4 or something like that.
On my MacBook (on WiFi) however, I can't.
Output of 'ifconfig' and 'netstat -rn' would be useful to see to determine what is and what is not wrong.
I get no response from the terminal when running 'aiccu start'
That is because the output goes to syslog, thus check your log files. Or set daemonize false and verbose true as stated on the contact page.
Is my debian server setup correctly?
Likely not. Please provide outputs of ifconfig, ip tunnel show, ip route show, ip -6 route show, ip -6 addr show, ip addr show etc as listed on the contact page.
