Running amUlticast beacon on osx
Shadow Hawkins on Tuesday, 18 March 2008 14:42:08
hello mcasters,
finally i set up a tunnel with a subnet on my linksys WRT with DD-WRT and now i want to setup
a multicast beacon on 1 or two of my macintosh machines
The sixxs FAQ said thats "deham01" supports it
http://www.sixxs.net/faq/connectivity/?faq=multicast
I got a "dbeacon" package from a friendly "osx " user that allow me to install the beacon
without having "xcode" ( osx develoepr tools) installed.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing Matrix on Mac OS X (10.4.9)
first use fink to install rrdtool, rrd-pm, rrd-pm586, and libxml-pm586
then copy the following directories and/or files to "Standard" Mac OS locations (or anywhere else in @INC)
/sw/lib/perl5/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/XML/ --> /Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin.../
/sw/lib/perl5/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/XML/ --> /Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin.../auto/
/sw/lib/perl5/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/RRDs.pm --> Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin.../
/sw/lib/perl5/5.8.6/darwin-thread-multi-2level/auto/RRDs/ --> /Library/Perl/5.8.6/darwin.../auto/
note, if you are moving this to a different machine you also need this file (path is important, must match that used in fink install):
so all the packages i need are in the " perl-parts.tar" inside the "package"
I put all files in the explained directories.
I dont know what todo with this:
/sw/lib/libexpat.0.dylib
When i use this command i got an
make /etc/dbeacon/matrix.conf and put this in:
make: *** No rule to make target `/etc/dbeacon/matrix.conf'. Stop.
Error , i think thats why i have no compiler or xcode tools installed on this machine.
# Where dbeacon is generating its dump?
$dumpfile = "/services/beacon/data/dump.xml";
# In which directory rrd are stored
$history_enabled =1;
$historydir = "/services/beacon/dbeacon-history";
## misc settings for ICCN
$title = 'ICCN IPv4 Multicast Beacon';
add this to your crontab:
* * * * * /services/beacon/bin/matrix.pl /services/beacon/data/dump.xml > /services/beacon/log/dbeacon-matrix.log 2>&1
(make sure the log directory and file exist)
add this to /etc/httpd/httpd.conf:
ScriptAlias /matrix/ /services/beacon/bin/matrix.pl
could someone from the sixx crew give me some advice ?
Why are there just 3 machines ?

this seems inactive http://paperboy.nysernet.org/matrix/
greetings
Marc

It needs to send it to the PoP, otherwise that won't receive it, or forward it.

As that is not a tunnel address, that most very likely doesn't end up at the PoP in any way. Unless you have a ecmh running somewhere else and that somewhere else is forwarding multicast to the PoP that is.

Connectivity to M6Bone(?) seems to be limited sometimes and therefore only the dbeacons using Sixxs' POPs are in the list. Furthermore older dbeacons do for some reason not include newer ones (my dbeacon http://ipv6.riechers.info/matrix/ never shows up at http://dbeacon.sixxs.net/ )
Since you're running dbeacon on MacOSX consider using the -O flag with dbeacon, since SSM isn't implemented.
