Campus Subnet Plan
[gb] Shadow Hawkins on Thursday, 08 May 2008 15:59:39
Hi I have recently left my previous employment as a sysadmin for a college in the UK to live in Denmark. Here is a spreadsheet listing the v4 and v6 networks on the campuses. http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=pxxr_a5O5u04WyOthDehzPQ The subnet plan was such that the prefix for each /64 IPv6 network could easily be calculated given the /23 IPv4 network. For example:- 10.10.0.0/23 -> 2001:x:x:8500::/64 10.12.0.0/23 -> 2001:x:x:8600::/64 10.14.0.0/23 -> 2001:x:x:8700::/64 I hope you find this informative. Chris Hills

And now you're inviting hackers into that net, having given them a nice map where to look? :-) Not sure of the purpose here. Maybe you're not looking to be a sysadmin again. :-) Nevertheless, IPv6 gives resources a little more anonymity in that the subnets are so large that scanning them becomes rather unfeasible.

If you believe in security through obscurity, being a sysadmin is not right for you. It is merely posted as a guide to others who may be looking for information on how to segment their networks.

He is also missing the part that a /64 contains 2^64 IPs thus even with the information of which /64 is occupied it would still take ages to scan all the IPs to actually find anything. Instead of trying to find the diagram of a network and then scanning it, there are much better ways, quite a few are to be found in the following excellent paper: Worm propagation strategies in an IPv6 Internet by Steve Bellovin et al. Of course the best attack is still and always will be social engineering, just ask for the usernames, password and access numbers/locations/etc ;)
