route ipv4 net over ipv6
[de] Shadow Hawkins on Saturday, 03 January 2009 16:26:18
Hi everybody, I'm trying to route a private IPv4 net over IPv6 to another host. But I don't know how to set this up. I tried something with openvpn but the ipv6 support isn't that good. And i don't even know if openvpn is powerful enough to do this. So does anybody have a clue how to get this started? Thanks in advance, Simon

I think this page explains exactly what you want to do : http://linux-hacks.blogspot.com/2008/02/howto-ipv6-ipv6-tunnel-and-ip4-ipv6.html Have a look at the 'Steps to create a ipv4-ipv6 tunnel' part. Basically, it doesn't involve any user space daemon. Tunnels are part of the kernel, so it should be fast and reliable, even on low end machines. IP in IP tunnels don't provide encryption. However, GRE tunnels should be able to do that, but I guess they're more tricky to set up. If you succeed in doing this, perhaps writing a short how-to on the wiki should help others :) I don't have time to set up a test environment right now, but I might try that soon.
