IPv4 routing problem blocking static tunnel to uschi02
[us] Carmen Sandiego on Monday, 14 April 2008 21:22:39
I have read and followed the "Reporting Problems" section on the Contact page and am providing the following details for this report based on the list of items stated there: This concerns handle: GNI1-SIXXS Tunnel: T14086 / 2001:4978:f:88::2 Despite uschi02 status being up and my knowledge that others are connecting through it with no issues, There's an IPv4 routing issue between pccwbtn.net and your.org that's blocking my tunnel traffic. From my end of the tunnel at 209.144.225.87: gneff@neuron-/home/gneff$ traceroute 216.14.98.22 traceroute to 216.14.98.22 (216.14.98.22), 64 hops max, 40 byte packets 1 host65.fxol.com (209.144.225.65) 0.681 ms 0.469 ms 0.737 ms 2 border1.fe5-9.appserve-2.ext1a.dal.pnap.net (216.52.189.81) 0.864 ms 1.445 ms 0.866 ms 3 core1.tge5-2-bbnet2.ext1.dal.pnap.net (216.52.191.103) 1.488 ms 2.723 ms 4.240 ms 4 ae0.411.ar1.DAL2.gblx.net (208.51.41.57) 2.731 ms 1.581 ms 1.736 ms 5 64.213.176.242 (64.213.176.242) 24.726 ms 24.721 ms 24.354 ms 6 your.org.ge2-5.br02.chc01.pccwbtn.net (63.218.5.38) 24.847 ms 24.757 ms 24.853 ms 7 * * * :: snip :: 64 * * * I can ping and traceroute to 216.14.98.22 from other locations with no issues. I've been getting automated tunnel down warning E-mails
(and point deductions) for 4 days now, despite this being
completely out of my control or that of my ISP's.
You receive the robot's notification already for four days, and apparently are really sure that it is not you or your ISP causing it, and only file a ticket about this now? Odd.

Is that traceroute you pasted from the uschi02 PoP? I have, for good measure, filed a ticket with my ISP as well.

IPv4 routing problem blocking static tunnel to uschi02
[ch] Jeroen Massar SixXS Staff on Tuesday, 15 April 2008 14:24:42
How exactly was this a problem at the PoP end? If you didn't notice above, it was perfectly able to almost reach your endpoint with at least a traceroute. Don't point fingers unless you have conclusive material.

My desire was for a solution, not to place blame. The successful traceroute from my end looks identical the the previous unsuccessful one, with the exception of the last hop. The traceroute you pasted looked very different. I would suspect that now it's working a traceroute from uschi02 to 209.144.225.87 would look very much like it does from my end.

You have clearly never heard of dynamic routing or asymmetrical paths. The paths don't have to be the same, and can change from one moment to the other. You can do your own traceroutes from almost every PoP using the traceroute tool on this site. Verify it yourself.
